Synopsis: An early look at the 4-hour PBS documentary series, HALF THE SKY, based on the book by NY Times journalist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable—and fighting bravely to change them. Their intimate, dramatic and immediate stories of struggle reflect viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offer an actionable blueprint for transformation. As the centerpiece of a major transmedia initiative, HALF THE SKY lays out an urgent agenda on behalf of the world’s women—and against the shocking abuses they routinely endure: sex trafficking and forced prostitution; gender-based violence, including honor killings and mass rape; and maternal mortality, which needlessly claims one woman a minute. In today’s turbulent, troubled world, full of worthy causes, the ongoing oppression of women and girls presents us with the single most compelling moral challenge of our time and a transcendent opportunity to make a difference. HALF THE SKY joins a burgeoning worldwide movement that aims to unlock women’s power and potential, and transform them into agents of change.
