
Highlighting the importance of midwifery care in Guatemala, a country with high maternal mortality, Erika and Dora Maria are training to be the first university-level midwives in the country, incorporating new skills into their culture’s traditional practices.
Filmmaker Bio:
Clancy is the Producer for Every Mother Counts. She began her career in maternal health by co-producing founder, Christy Turlington Burns’ debut documentary film, NO WOMAN, NO CRY about pregnancy and childbirth in Tanzania, Guatemala, Bangladesh and the US (OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network 2011). Clancy now works primarily on developing Every Mother Counts’ film and storytelling portfolio. She is currently directing/producing Every Mother Counts’ documentary series, Giving Birth in America, most recently in Louisiana and originally in Montana, New York, Florida (CNN Digital Studios 2015). The film series examines why the US is falling so far behind in maternal health care. She also recently directed and produced the documentary Con Madre, about the first class of university-level midwives in Guatemala, and has also produced films about Every Mother Counts’ work in Haiti, Malawi, Uganda and Tanzania. She has run four marathons on behalf of Every Mother Counts and is a DONA trained doula based in Los Angeles, CA studying to become a nurse-midwife.
